It is indeed the best building I have ever been too and I've said it before but it truly did exceed my expectations. My only disappointment was that I had no Significant Other to share it's beauty with. If I ever do have a very Significant Other again then I shall insist that we go there together. It is a very romantic place.
It was built by Shah Jahan in the memory of his beautiful wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Exalted of the Palace and Mumtaz-ul-Zamani, the Exalted of the Age. But she sadly (but perhaps not surprisingly) died in childbirth at the age of 39, after presenting him with fourteen children, of whom only four sons and three daughters survived. Shah Jahan was inconsolable and decided to erect a memorial to his queen in pristine marble that the world would never forget.
There is a legend that Shah Jahan had the eyes of the architects put out when the Taj Mahal was completed, to prevent them from ever building anything so beautiful again.
Soon after Taj Mahal's completion, Shah Jahan was deposed and imprisoned at nearby Agra Fort by his son Aurangzeb. Upon Shah Jahan's death, Aurangzeb buried him in the Taj Mahal alongside his wife, and so they were reunited.
One of the things I truly love about the palace is the way it changes colour from dusk to dawn. If you ever get the chance to visit, make sure you see the sunrise and sunset reflected on the marble walls.
